MYP Job alike in Bangalore - April 2010

MYP Job Alike Session
Curtis Beaverford would be in Bangalore for the pre authorization at Stonehill on the 12 and 13th of April so he has kindly consented to be present in Bangalore from the 10 and 11th April for the SAIBSA MYP Job Alike Session. Hence the venue and dates of the MYP Job Alike session has been changed.

1. It would be held in Indus International School, Bangalore (instead of Kodaikanal International School).
2. Dates : weekend 11th (Saturday ) and 12th (Sunday)April 2009.
3. I am posting the revised MYP agenda which can further be modified taking some of the suggestions from Curtis.
4. Given below is the revised agenda and Curtis has agreed to fine tune it with your inputs. Further we need to incorporate the second day agenda restricted to being till mid-day so teachers can take the flights back home to be on time for school on Monday, if that is what they choose to do.
Suggestions are:
(a) to take SLE on second day and
(b) Curtis’s suggestion " I wouldn’t mind somehow working on running the MYP with IGCSE examinations – to get those schools to come up with common strategies. I will have done a similar session before the conference with mostly Australian schools and could bring some of that to the table. That could run before or after or as a job alike session on the first day. “You may have other ideas too so just post it there.
Amended MYP Agenda

Service Project by Alpha Leo Club of SVKM International School at Aine, Dahanu

The evening of 3rd October saw the village of Aine, Dahanu in great bustle and activity. In the midst of the usually-quiet courtyard gathered a large group of children – singing, dancing and having fun! This group was an amalgamation of students of SVKM International School and children of the Warli tribe from the village – sharing the courtyard, the evening and the culture. While our students put up a small entertainment show of rollicking songs and tunes, the Warli children delighted us with a performance of their native form of dance and songs. Soon the disparities vanished as each group tried the other’s style and merged into one large group of joyous people bringing exhilarated life to the village.

This tempo did not fall the next morning as everyone set up for the day ahead. If one group of students set up tables for a medical camp, another group put up the charts on health awareness and hygiene all over the classes in the village. Some students gathered around the old structure that required painting, while others found themselves at the farm understanding and helping in the various farming activities. The proceeds from the week-long collection drive held in Mumbai prior to the trip were then arranged according to the plan of distribution. Soon the doctors arrived and the camp began in full swing! The Warli children went from one section to another – getting diagnosed, learning about day-to-day hygiene and receiving water bottles, medicines, insect repellents, art material, tools for oral and dental care etc. Subsequently, our students rotated between the different activities periodically and the day passed away in this busy stir…

All this buzz was part of a student-organized CAS project by the students of SVKM International School who have formed the Alpha Leo Club. Everything from the travel bookings to the allocation of time was planned by us students. It really challenged all our team work and organization capabilities, pushing us to the edge. Meeting and spending time with the Warli children gave us a taste of their lives. Living the way they lived right from bathing, sleeping to eating really helped us learn and grow as individuals. It sensitized us to the conditions around us that we may usually be shielded from and also, augmented our appreciation of the great gifts that we have been endowed with. Each one of us was touched by this trip, by the warmth and humility of the Warli people and the keenness of the children to learn. And, I do believe, that in our own small way, each one of us touched their lives as well…

Rakhee project at DRS International school

“LET US HELP THE POOR” CAS Programme at DRSIS was successfully launched on 18th July 2009.

Having received a brief orientation on the programme the IB DP students set out to embark on the first project on the eve of Rakshabandhan and Friendship Day.

The students enthusiastically took up the task of designing and sale of rakhee’s and friendship bands for the two occasions under the guidance of the art and crafts department.

The entire event was planned and executed successfully by the students.

They worked in groups to set their marketing and production unit .Various posters generating awareness about the event were put up at strategic locations in the school campus .Handouts were distributed intimating the school community about the timings of the sale

The waste material in the arts and crafts department along with some new material was utilized for the production of Rakhees & friendship bands. It took around 10-15 days to complete the project, which includes production of 400-500 rakhees & bands, packaging, fixing the price and the price tags, designing market plan and creating and displaying the same.

The project was a roaring success .The students were able to generate a profit of Rs.5500, which would be utilized for distributing books and stationary for a Village School adopted by DRS fraternity on the forthcoming occasion of The International Literacy Day (8th September 2009).

Music Festival - Kodaikanal

Music Festival for CORSOCK”s MERCY HOME - Kodaikanal

Kodaikanal International School is located at 2133m in the peaceful Palani Hills of South India, a region known for its rugged beauty and cool temperate climate.KIS combines an ambitious, challenging academic program and a rich range of extracurricular activities within a Christian values framework that draws on a variety of cultures and prepares students for global citizenship.

The Social Experience program at KIS aims to blend a comprehensive classroom teaching program with a variety of community oriented activities providing students with abundant opportunities for enriching personal growth, enhanced civic awareness and a progressive global outlook. Classroom teaching focuses on topics as diverse as climate change, child labour, tribal culture and village justice, the digital divide, animal rights, deforestation, women’s issues etc, through seminars, video presentations, “take a stand” activities, story telling and lectures. The emphasis is on sustainability and empowerment. Students are encouraged to develop an approach of mutual and reciprocal interaction with the community.

CORSOCK’s Mercy Home presently houses 18 residents providing them with basic food, shelter and clothing. The Social Experience department at Kodaikanal International School works with the Mercy Home on a regular basis and KIS students are involved in a variety of activities at the home.

There is an urgent need for better infrastructure {bedding, lighting, plumbing, solar heating} and better medical care {consultations and specialist referrals eg: Eye care, Hearing aids, Cardiology consults; preventive medicine and screening including bone densitometry; dental care; medicines for Epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, Hypertension, Arthritis, Osteoporosis, etc;}. Footwear, toiletry items, duvets, frame walkers etc are also needed. A kitchen garden is being nurtured to supplement their diet and a herb garden is being planned to provide for simple home remedies. The driveway needs to be paved and the terracing and maintenance of the grounds needs attention. An inverter is needed in view of the frequent power cuts.

KIS students visit Mercy home every weekend and interact with the residents. The emotional bonding that takes place benefits both the residents as well as the students and activities include playing caroms, collecting firewood, massages for aching limbs, music, dance, art, simple exercises, maintenance work etc. The Mercy Home experience continues to be an enriching educational experience for KIS students and is a pillar of support to the residents.

KIS staged a music festival in aid of Corsock’s Mercy Home to commemorate the twentieth anniversary of the first Kodai Music festival held in 1989. The 4 day program included daytime master classes and workshops for intermediate and advanced guitar students followed by evening concerts featuring world renowned artists.

The following musicians performed:

Andrew York {winner of the Grammy award with the LAGQ in 2005} who is considered to be one of the greatest composer- guitarists of our time,

Andrew York is one of today's most visible and innovative classical guitar composers, and a former member of the GRAMMY winning Los Angeles Guitar Quartet

In 2006 Andrew recorded and performed with the Atlanta symphony for the opera ”Ainadamar” by Osvaldo Golijov. The recording of ”Ainadamar” (Deutsche Gramophone) won two GRAMMY awards.

Andrew received his Master of Music degree from University of Southern California, and is the only USC graduate in the school’s history to twice receive the Outstanding Alumni of the Year Award

Oliver Rajamani, a KIS alumnus currently based in Austin, Texas who is famed for his groundbreaking multi-instrumental performances that trace the 1000 year old migration of the gypsies from India to Europe,

The music of Rajamani is of so called many traditions and not of any one tradition. Thus it unites all human beings spiritually, stripping one of all illusions to lead you back into your heart and soul. It is a sound that is at once foreign and familiar. Drawing upon ancient Eastern traditions, his music resonates in a deep place within its listeners, while remaining accessible and satisfying to the Western ear.

He has performed and recorded with internationally known artists such as Glen Velez, Gypsy Kings, Lara and Reyes, Arthur Brown (the God of Hell Fire), Aloke Dutta and many other traditional world music, folk, rock n roll, and country artists. He has given musical accompaniment for great poets and story tellers such as Coleman Barks, Robert Bly and David Whyte on stage. He has also performed for the Maharaja of Jodhpur, Gaj Singh II

Bangalore’s maverick rock band “Thermal and a quarter” [TAAQ] led by master guitarist Bruce Lee Mani who will perform an acoustic set.

Thermal and a Quarter is the musical voice of modern India that speaks the languages of the world. They are the only rock band from India to be featured on national public radio’s All Things Considered. They have also supported Jethro Tull and Deep Purple on tour.

The virtuoso guitar and violin duo of Louise Southwood and David France from Bermuda.

Louise was born in Paris in 1978. Her guitar playing began at an early age with many competition successes and performances throughout the UK. In 2000 she was awarded a Bachelor of Music (Hons) from The Royal College of Music in London

After a year of travelling and performing throughout Australia Louise returned to London where she and Daniel Chandler formed an acclaimed guitar and flute duo. Performance engagements within the UK were highlighted by appearances at The Trinity Chapel, Cambridge and The Dillington Guitar Festival.

She currently holds a position of classical guitar teacher at The Bermuda School of Music. Since arriving in 2004, she has been fully involved in the island’s musical scene and has released her debut CD ‘Emergence’.

The Kodai Music Festival was one of a kind, a rare and unique musical feast in one of India’s most beautiful hill resorts. All of the proceeds from the festival and all related donations and contributions went directly to CORSOCK’s Mercy Home.

Inaugural Message

It is said that “One step must start each journey.”

This first issue of SAIBSA e-newsletter is such one step which opens the doorway of communication in this age of information technology.

We are delighted that finally we have an e-newsletter which initially will be quarterly –November, April and August. It is our hope that it would be a good way to communicate news and views from IB Schools in the South Asia region and possible updates of their IB programme –PYP, MYP and DP. We have agreed to begin with a thematic approach- Sharing our Humanity would be the central piece of this news-letter. The blog format has been chosen so readers can give their comments and it would be sort of interactive!!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Dhirubhai Ambani International School, Mumbai and Riad their DP Coordinator for helping SAIBSA to actualize this project!! So this joy ride begins with eagerness, excitement and optimism.

With warm wishes,
Kaisar Dopaishi
